Learning objectives

The aim of this course is to provide basics scientific and academic skills and abilities from the field of:
application of microorganism in the production purposes, understanding of the pattern-related relationship between the properties of production microorganisms and various stages of the biotechnological process, as well as comparing with the entire biotechnology process.

Learning outcomes

After successfully mastering of the module students will be able to understand the importance and role of production microorganisms as a biocatalysts, understanding the principle of maintaining a good production strain in terms of preserving and improving its technological characteristics, understanding the principle of formulating nutrients and conditions of the biotechnological process according to the needs of the production strain. Also, the student should develop the ability to think rationally when selecting the technique and the way of performing bioprocess and selecting bioseparation techniques in order to extract or finalize the bioproducts.

Course contents

Introduction to industrial microbiology; production microorganisms; environment and growth of microorganisms and preparatory phase in biotechnological production; performing biotechnological process; the final stages in biotechnological production; fermentation, biosynthesis and bioconversion. Laboratory exercises in the field of selection of the production strain, formulation, preparation and application of nutrient substrate, defining of significant process conditions, selection of technique for performing the microbiological process and separation and purification of the obtained products.
