Learning objectives

Acquiring basic geographical knowledge about geospatial potential; physical-geographical, demographic, settlement and socioeconomic characteristics of rural areas in the function of complex development. Adoption of the methodology for differentiating rural areas based on development opportunities and limitations and finding instruments for rural area revitalization and inclusion in development processes.

Learning outcomes

Adoption of complex theoretical knowledge, methodology, methods and techniques of rural area research and their application in planning the development of rural area and finding solutions in establishing a more efficient spatial organization. Through research work in the field, students should acquire practical experience in the application of research methods and observe the development problems of the rural areas of the Republic of Srpska.

Course contents

1. Geographical bases of spatial planning and rural development.
2. Selection, typology and characteristics of rural areas.
3. Developmental problems of rural areas (demographic, economic, infrastructural, systemic).
4. Contemporary socio-geographical processes and transformation of rural space.
5. Modern valorization of rural space. Rural space in the development plans of the European Union.
6. Objectives of planning and development of rural areas, rural development policy.
7. Infrastructure in the function of development. Valorization and spatial-functional organization of rural areas.
8. Rural area of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika Srpska - Physical-geographical regionalization and potentials.
9. Settlement conditions and demographic processes in the rural areas of the Republic of Srpska.
10. Socioeconomic interaction of rural and urban space. Traditional and market-oriented rural area.
11. The concept of rural development in the spatial planning documents of the Republic of Srpska.
12. Identification and characteristics of prosperous rural areas of the Republic of Srpska.
13. Isolation of problem areas. Revitalization measures.
14. Complex approach to rural development and planning.
15. Systemic approach in establishing sustainable and balanced spatial development.
