Learning objectives

Interdisciplinary approach and acquisition of specific knowledge and abilities in the field of geosystems for the purpose of using analytical functions of geographic information systems.

Learning outcomes

Students should acquire specific knowledge and skills of systemic analysis of the global geosystem and its spatial structures (physical-geographical, social-geographical and regional). Students will be able to observe spatial structures and the global geosystem in a cause-and-effect manner, which enables them to apply the acquired knowledge in complex GIS spatial analyses.

Course contents

Introduction to geosystems and systems theory. A systemic approach. Elaboration of basic concepts in the geosystem approach. Methodological foundations of the system approach. System theory. Types of direct and return connections in the geosystem. The concept of information in the geosystem. Phases of system modeling. Natural complexes - landscapes, geocomplexes. Physical geography and man - land and people in the process of ethnogenesis. Natural factors of population development. The character of the influence of the geographical environment on the population. Social factors of demographic development. Population as an autonomous bio-social geographic system. Ethnos as a bio-social system. Settlements and population. Gravity and potential models. Regional urban systems. The influence of socio-economic processes on natural systems. About the human - environment system.

Evaluation and grading

Knowledge verification is done in writing (test) during the semester. The final exam is written (test) and oral. A submitted and defended seminar paper on the exercises is a condition for taking the written test, that is, the oral exam.

Teaching Methods

Acquisition of specific knowledge in the field of geosystems, through the analysis of spatial structures and characteristics. Professional knowledge and abilities will be provided through lectures, exercises, consultations and practical teaching through the processing of seminar papers that include case studies.
