Learning objectives

The objective of studying the subject is to enable students to acquire knowledge that will enable them to understand, explore and analyze the processes of urbanization today, primarily the cause, the flow and consequences of these processes in the wider urban environment and in particular the transition from urban to rural. The main goal is to acquire knowledge about current approaches, methods and practices from the world and the region in the context of suburban urbanization issues. Students should be familiar with formal and informal planning models and understand the processes and methodology of strategic urban design as a combination of strategically oriented planning and value oriented design. They should acquire the knowledge gained through the urban design project of a specific multifunctional unit.

Learning outcomes

Comprehensive understanding of the process of urbanization in the territory of BiH, the former Yugoslavia and the Balkans in different historical, social and economic conditions. Acquiring knowledge about the methodology of strategic urban design and the practice of developing concepts / development strategies and / or problem-oriented projects. Skills and abilities for a comprehensive analysis of spatial patterns of urban, rural and urban-rural areas of the city, and assessment of problems, potentials, weaknesses and advantages of a specific area, based on a strategic approach to development. Skills and skills for applied research, site analysis through surveying and cooperation with stakeholders and critical thinking. Application of acquired knowledge and skills in a concrete urban design project - through an internal student competition.

Course contents

- Historical development of the spatial pattern of the suburbs (BiH, the Balkans). Processes of urbanization of the region in the 20th century (SFRY) and spatial pattern of the suburb. Typology of spatial patterns of urban, rural and urban-rural areas of the city of Banja Luka. (P)
- Current approaches, methods and tools in the context of suburban urbanization issues, from the world and the region. Formal and informal planning models, processes and methodologies. Adaptable planning model and problem of suburban urbanization. (P)
- Strategic urban design and the problem of suburban urbanization. Strategies / Concepts of Suburban regeneration (P + V)
- Internal student competition for urban design project (V)
