Form of prerequisites:

Prerequisite for taking the course is to submit and defend semestral assignments. Prerequisite for taking the exam is to get a positive grade.

Learning objectives

Introducing students to the basic elements of wooden structures. Acquiring knowledge about the method of calculation and the formation of wooden structures. Familiarity with classic and contemporary wooden structures (GLT).

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student acquires knowledge for the calculation of cross-sections and wooden elements for different types of impact and the knowledge needed for designing (static calculation and dimensioning) of various types of wooden structures.

Course contents

Introduction, concepts and definitions, states of stress, allowable stresses, proofs of bearing capacity and proofs of serviceability, combinations of loads, wood as a structure material. Wood materials, classification of wooden structures, durability of wooden structures, wood and fire. Application of European standards for wooden structures, limit states of load capacity, limit states of usability, evidence of stability of structural elements. Joints in wooden structures, general, notch, connections with rod fasteners, connections with nails, screws and dowels, connections with wood screws, dowels and other fasteners. Evidence of load-bearing capacity of structure elements, classic roof structures, division and application. Roof structures, calculation of elements and characteristic details. Lattice systems in structures, impact analysis and bearing proofs, formation of details, connections and extensions in modern structures, calculation of connections. Panel wooden elements, their use in load-bearing structures, calculation of the main elements. Industrial buildings made of wooden structures, spatial stability, formation of hall disposition, main supports, cornices, couplings and other parts of halls, calculation and their dimensioning. Glued laminated structures, systems and applications, calculation and dimensioning of full girder.
